The 2021-2022 season at WNO was announced today. The season opens with a concert featuring sopranos Pretty Yende and Alexandria Shiner; mezzo-soprano Isabel Leonard; tenors Lawrence Brownlee and David Butt Philip; and bass-baritone Christian Van Horn. Four world premieres open next March composed by Alicia Hall Moran, Huang Ruo, Kamala Sankaram, and Carlos Simon.

The 2020-2021 season at WNO was announced today. Elkhanah Pulitzer makes her WNO directorial debut with Nixon in China, and Renée Fleming does too with Così fan tutte.

WNO Ring 2016

Nina Stemme photo by Tanja NiemannWashington National Opera just announced principal casting and performance dates for its first complete presentation of Wagner's Ring cycle. Three full cycles will be presented from April 30 to May 22, 2016 and will be directed by Francesca Zambello and conducted by Philippe Auguin.

Nina Stemme (pictured left, photograph by Tanja Niemann) and Catherine Foster share the role of Brünnhilde. Daniel Brenna sings Siegfried in the United States for the first time. Alan Held is Wotan. Subscription packages will be available Spring 2015.

Washington National Opera's New Wave of Artistic Initiatives

Kennedy-centerToday Washington National Opera announced a plethora of new initiatives, including the presentation of WNO Artistic Advisor Francesca Zambello's "American Ring" in 2016, a New American Works Project to promote young American composers and librettists, a holiday opera each season, performances at the Kennedy Center Terrace Theater, a new production each season, and one production per season directed by Zambello.

Eric Owens will share the role of Porgy with Lester Lynch. Teddy Tahu Rhodes will sing Almaviva in Le Nozze, with Ildar Abdrazakov as Figaro. Diana Damrau sings Ophelia in Hamlet opposite Carlos Álvarez in the title role.

Renée Fleming has her WNO debut in Lucrezia Borgia. Denyce Graves sings the title role of Carmen, in the Zambello production from ROH. The Zandra Rhodes production of Les Pêcheurs de Perles is the one we had here in San Francisco in 2005.


WNO Opera's 2009 Ring Cycle

Washington National Opera is presenting a complete Ring Cycle for the first time in November of 2009. Dubbed the "American Ring," this co-production with San Francisco Opera is directed by Francesca Zambello.
